Published Jul 23 2012, 09:08 BST | By Simon Reynolds
This summer has already seen its fair share of sporting action with Spain lifting the European Championship trophy and Roger Federer overcoming Brit Andy Murray in the Wimbledon final. This week, the nation gets another jolt of excitement when London hosts the Olympic games for the first time since 1948. Sport and cinema go hand-in-hand, of course, with movies such as Rocky, Chariots of Fire and Escape to Victory all establishing themselves as firm favourites among film fans.

Greatest Ever Sports Movies: 25. Hoop Dreams (1994)

Thank you for voting in our poll. Check back soon to see the results!

No mention of Wind (Sailing - America's Cup) or True Blue (Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race) - I have both as DVD's and enjoy both films

Notable omissions include : The Set-Up, The Champ (1931), The Hustler, Gentleman Jim, Knute Rockne - All American, Pride of the Yankees, Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia, Requiem For A Heavywight, Angels In The Outfield, and many more. Why are none of these mentioned? Because they're all in black-and-white and made before 1963 - which means, as far as the DigitalSpy movie 'expert' is concerned, they might as well not exist at all. Another utterly pointless and badly researched DS movie article.
PS - others you missed include...KingPin, The Endless Summer, Jerry Maguire, Talladega Nights, Brian's Song, The Longest Yard a.k.a. The Mean Machine, Bad News Bears, The Pride of the Yankees, Eight Men Out, A League of Their Own, Major League, Caddyshack, The Natural, Slap Shot, National Velvet, and Tin Cup.

Rocky ahead of Raging Bull? What a joke; speaks volumes as to why there's so much crap flooding the mediums of entertainment.
