We were no different. Though we can understand why the nominees were much beloved by the Academy voters, we had a few that, in our mind, were robbed of a nod.
But fear not - below are Digital Spy's Alternative Oscar Awards, celebrating this year's greatest who missed out on a nomination. Read on to find out the nominees and who we crowned the best of the rest.
And the Alternative Oscar goes to... There were so many good films this year that we wouldn't have begrudged an Oscar nomination, from Shame and Young Adult to the delightfully funny and scary Attack the Block. Bridesmaids was hilarious, while Senna was truly moving.
In the end, we present the award to Drive. It was simply the most memorable release for us this year, ever since we saw it in Cannes back in May. Everything comes together in such a complementary way that it's hard to pinpoint one single thing that makes the movie special. Gosling's performance, the amazing supporting cast which includes Albert Brooks and Bryan Cranston, the thrills, the expert direction, the soundtrack - oh gosh, the utterly brilliant soundtrack...
We could go on, but to sum it up, Drive is one heck of an aesthetically pleasing film, and it's a story with grace and brutality that has you hooked right from the word 'go'.
And the Alternative Oscar goes to... While there's no doubt that everyone in this category is talented behind the camera, Nicolas Winding Refn wowed us with his direction and style.
Refn gets the pacing of Drive spot-on and cleverly holds back on violence until the scene requires it. The small handful of brutal violent moments have much more of an impact because the rest of the film is so controlled. At the hands of another director, who knows how Drive would have turned out - make no mistake, Refn makes the movie his own.
And the Alternative Oscar goes to... We loved Ryan Gosling in Drive and we have a weak spot for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but Michael Fassbender was phenomenal as the tormented sex addict and we're surprised the Academy have not recognised him in the nominations.
Brandon is a tragic character, and Fassbender fully commits himself in embodying him in a disturbingly convincing and real way. An undoubtedly career-best turn and ably supported by Carey Mulligan, the actor propels the material into a must-watch film.

And the Alternative Oscar goes to... This was an exceptionally competitive category, so much so that Kirsten Dunst only just missed out for Melancholia. All five actresses wouldn't feel out of place at all had they been chosen by the Academy.
New revelations Elizabeth Olsen and Brit Marling were a breath of fresh air, while we also loved Olivia Colman, Tilda Swinton and Charlize Theron in their respective films. We finally plumped for Charlize Theron for her near-perfect portrayal of the 30-something Mavis Gary. Absolutely nailing the character's bitchy side and the more serious and touching moments, she brings a level of humanity which makes Mavis feel believable and real.
And the Alternative Oscar goes to... The final part of Harry Potter's tale sadly failed to make much of an impression on the Academy voters. However, we thoroughly enjoyed Deathly Hallows: Part II partly thanks to an outstanding Alan Rickman.
Albert Brooks was similarly fantastic as the mobster Bernie - unexpectedly so, too, as we're so used to seeing him in light-hearted roles - and Uggie was, um, adorable, but Rickman truly owns Severus Snape. We can't imagine anyone else as the former Potions teacher, and the numerous layers and the complexity of the character allowed Rickman to shine and deliver his best turn in the entire series.
And the Alternative Oscar goes to... Alexander Payne's The Descendants was a touching film anchored by an exceptional George Clooney performance. Matching him all the way, however, was Shailene Woodley who played his teenage daughter Alex.
The writers deserve some of the credit for penning a wonderful arc for the character, but it was Woodley who brought her to life in moving fashion, showing the snarky and rebellious side as well as Alex's sincerity and vulnerability. Woodley is a promising young talent and should have been rewarded with a real Oscar nomination.
