Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has been announced by Sega. The follow-up to 2010 release Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing adds brand new vehicles that adapt to the racing environment.
Regular karts and cars transform into boats and planes depending on the course. The changes affect the handling of each vehicle, adding an additional level of difficulty to regular races.
Super Monkey Ball's Temple Trouble track, for example, sees cars transform into boats as the course gives way under the weight of the cars. A Panzer Dragoon inspired track, meanwhile, features flight-based racing as players avoid obstacles by barrel rolling in the sky.
In addition to returning characters such as Sonic, Dr Eggman and Super Monkey Ball's AiAi, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed welcomes newcomers including Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia.
The game also adds a new weapon system, enabling players to block and evade attacks from other drivers. It will also feature enhanced online multiplayer modes, Grand Prix and Battle Arenas.
"Given the fantastic feedback we received from critics and consumers alike for the first game we really wanted to push the boundaries on our follow up game, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed," explained Sonic Brand Director David Corless.
"The transforming vehicles allow us to do this - as well as drifting your car around the corners of a track, you get to fly your plane and pilot your boat against others all within one race.
"Add to this a grid full of star characters, retro IP, fun, fast race modes and cool tracks and racing fans of all ages are sure to love this one!"
Predecessor Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing was released on home consoles, as well as the PC, Nintendo DS and iOS devices.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed releases on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita later this year.

Brian Swann Nights was on Sonic Riders. Though I haven't played the original S&SASR, I thought that Nights would have been on that? I guess not, haha.
