Sachin Shah No they didn't. They gave return of the king that award because they felt it was the best film of the year. If they were right or not is up to debate. But they didn't get an award just because the other films didn't. Saying that sorta cheapens it in my opinion. You should only look at the current film when giving an award.

Irfon Pennant Williams - that's the point, though, right? The first two lost out, and so they almost *had* to give it to the final film almost as a token nod to the entire trilogy.

Sachin Shah There was also something different about LOTR when it won best picture at the oscars. Each instalment had been nominated for best picture, so it wasn't just for the hell of it.

Irfon Pennant Williams - reminds me of how the third LotR film won the Oscar (some say) because the first two didn't.

How Harry Potter beat Rise of the Planet of the Apes to best visual effects I'll never know. Well I do know, cause it was the last ever one they decided to give it the award. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a much better film aswell...
