Before Watchmen writer Len Wein has said that it was "about time" for the prequels.Wein - who served as editor of the original series - has accused co-creator Alan Moore of being "selfish" regarding his resistance to the ongoing DC Comics project.

"I said, 'It's about time'," he told ComicBook.com. "Alan had the opportunity for a quarter of a century to do some of these stories and he decided not to.
"It's time somebody did it, especially at the quarter-century mark," he continued. "Some of us that were around when it started, may not be around at the next quarter-century mark."
Wein - who disagreed with Moore over the conclusion of Watchmen - was the creator of Swamp Thing, a character which helped launch Moore into the American superhero comics spotlight.
"I find it extraordinarily selfish of Alan to take the position he's taken," said Wein. "Had I taken that position with Swamp Thing, he might not have the career in the States that he has now.
"It's an industry of characters, and everybody gets to play in everyone else's sandbox," he continued.
"People ask me how I feel about the way other writers have treated my characters over the years, and my response is, 'Gee, I wonder how [Jerry] Siegel and [Joe] Shuster and Bob Kane, and Stan and Ditko and all those guys felt about how I treated their characters'."
Wein is currently writing Before Watchmen: Ozymandias and the 'Curse of the Crimson Corsair' backups as part of the project.
Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons recently said that he does not consider the title's spinoffs to be in canon.

PS the founding Fathers will always get 'credit' but can't complain when their work is 'interpreted' by the Supreme Court... even before their deaths they set up a system they would lose control of when done writing...

Emmits right... Without DC letting him 'parody' their properties in the first place there is no 'WATCHMEN'... His versions of Bats/Sups/SwampThing were not 'controlled' by their creators... and he signed a contract which he was too busy to read as far as to control of these characters... YES creators have many issues which have not been fair for them thru the years-- StanLee obviously still 'needs the money'...-- but Mr Moore has LESS of a gripe than most all of em.... bet he cashes the checks... just his way of being hermitic... 'oh that crap!... I'm against it --won't read it or talk about it in any way...!?!? Get OFF MY LAWN...'

Can't stand Alan Moore and his self righteous attitude and his recent work which borders on child porn within graphic novels is shocking and I read The Crossed so it takes a lot to shock me, the guy is a weirdo.

I do agree that it is a good idea, but I disagree that Alan is "selfish".
It is kind of bogus how your idea can get taken away, and I believe we have that right to credit ourselves for it. Is like not giving credit to our Founding Fathers writing the Constitution, or being grateful our country gave us them. That the Revolution(no pun intended Digital Spy, lol) was merely an act of opportunity than ideals or belief.
Alan has more of a right to disagree, cause without him, we wouldn't know what the heck is 'Watchmen'.

Have to disagree with you there. Alan Moore has been using other individuals' characters for decades. It's a staple of the medium, and entertainment in general (how many interpretations of Batman has there been?). Swamp Thing, Green Lantern, even the Watchmen characters are based off of DC Comics characters (The Question; Black Canary & Phantom Lady; Captain Atom; Blue Beetle, etc.).
It IS completely selfish of Alan Moore. He constantly complains that there's no ingenuity left in the comics industry, when some of his most popular runs have been based off of the ideas/characters of others, and he then expects the franchise(s) to be left alone once he's finished with them.
He's perfectly allowed to state his opinion on the matter. But stating an opinion and relentlessly repeating it ad nauseam are two different matters. Also, to suggest that not giving Alan More full creative control over Watchmen is akin to not crediting the Founding Fathers of the USA is a bit of a leap, don't you think?
