artist Marcus To.Cyborg 009
centres around nine unwilling people who are kidnapped by the sinister Black Ghost Organisation and transformed into living weapons.
Breaking free from their evil masters, the group goes on a mission to prevent the world being plunged into a cataclysmic war.
"On the surface, Cyborg 009
appears to be a science fiction action/adventure story," said DeSanto. "However, Ishinomori's creation has endured because it's a story about the human spirit triumphing over incredible adversity.
"The sort of emotional trauma these nine people experience could happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time. Instead of becoming dark and oppressive, the story evolves into a message of hope and cooperation between people of different countries and races who share the singular goal of bringing peace to the planet.
"Humanity is the heart and soul of Cyborg 009
Debuting in 1964, Ishinomori's manga has been published in over 250 million weekly comics and other publications across the globe.
An animation and live-action adaptation of Cyborg 009
are also in the works.
The original graphic novel will be released digitally and in hardback format in 2013.
