The title will be written by Christy Marx, the creator of the '80s animated series Jem and the Holograms.
"Dan DiDio called me up out of the blue and said, 'Hey you remember Amethyst?'" Marx told io9. "And I said, 'Sure, I read the whole series when she came out'.
"And he said, 'Well, we're giving her a new series and a reboot - would you be interested?' And I said, 'Hell yeah!'"
The original series featured Amy Winston, a young girl who discovers that she is the orphaned princess from a magical kingdom.
"This will be a complete reboot," Marx continued. "The first thing I wanted to do - based on the tonal guidance Dan gave me - was age her up a bit. She's just turning 17 rather than being 13.
"She has a very different family background, but the same basic things are there. She grew up on Earth with a strange childhood and ends up back in her homeworld which she's never seen before.
"I'm taking a more intimate, familial approach to her adversary, who is her homicidal aunt who does not want to share power. I'm going for something dynastic with emotional complexity that will draw people in, and not just a bunch of people swinging swords.
"I'm trying to avoid a sparkly-crystals-and-pegasuses kind of approach. This is an alien world with blood powers that are related to crystals, but I'm going for a much more holistic approach."
The Sword of Sorcery anthology will set Amethyst in the lead story with a back-up featuring Beowulf and Grendel.
It was announced alongside new titles Talon, The Phantom Stranger and Team Seven, which will all debut with an issue #0 in September.

Not to mention the bland face she now has.

Two words Ricky Taylor....complete...reboot. "I'm trying to avoid a sparkly-crystals-and-pegasuses kind of approach." That was kind of the whole point behind Amethyst coming to being in the first place. You can pretty well expect that anything that existed before, the glitter, the costume, *she has pants up there in that pic* the previous storylines, are all going to turn dark, gritty, nothing like before and a waste of pages. Because that's what people want, right? Works so well with all the other flop reboots.

YES!! Amethyst is my favorite character in DCU for many years. You cannot believe how ecstatic I am with this revival of Amethyst.
I never heard of Christy Marx but I'm willing to give her a shot. I just hope that she will keep some stuff from the old series. I hope Amethyst retains her position as a Lord of Order. This is a must because in Infinite Crisis has indicated that Amethyst is the only Lord of Order that managed to survive The Spectre's murderous path in killing many Magic users. Not only that, it was said that Mordru is also the only Lord of Chaos (I think Flaw & The Child are still alive as well) that also survived when the 9th Age of Magic entered its 10th Age of Magic. The Spectre is quite powerful and if Amethyst managed to fend him, the conclusion is that she still is a Lord of Order.
I hope I get to see The Child, Flaw, Fire Jade, Citrina, Dark Opal, White Opal, Mordru, Mysa Nal, Mr. & Mrs. Winston, Doctor Fate, Donal as well as adding new characters on Gemworld. I hope it is still tied to Sorcerers' World as well.
I hope that Christy Marx will eventually cover the fight between Amethyst & The Spectre since Infinite Crisis only showed a brief one-image flash on her battling The Spectre. Why? So I can know why The Spectre failed to kill her.
