President of production Kevin Feige has revealed that the company is eyeing Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's version of the cosmic team, reports Comic Book Movie.
"It's more Star-Lord and Drax and Gamora, and less Vance Astro and that team," he said at a press junket for the Avengers movie.
"We are very excited about bringing things like that, maybe things exactly like that, to the screen.
"When you tell people, 'You know what would be really cool? This movie, and there's a raccoon, and there's a tree [Rocket Raccoon and Groot]'. And they go, 'What?' And people like you know what it is, and get excited. And the majority of people go, 'Did you say a raccoon and a tree?' 'Oh yeah, they're going to steal the whole movie. They're hilarious'. 'Okay, I'll believe it when I see it'. I like that."
Feige revealed that the studio knows which second film will follow Captain America 2 in 2014, but would not disclose it at this time.
The original Guardians of the Galaxy were introduced in 1969 as the heroes of an alternate timeline set in the distant future. The new version of the team span out of the 'Annihilation: Conquest' storyline.
Marvel Comics has promised a return of the Guardians later in the year.
Feige also recently revealed that Marvel is moving forward on its Ant-Man movie.

@Paul: totally agree with you. i've heard the movie will contain one or two of the original members...without at least that i won't bother going to see and and will give up with marvel....

I would love to be proved wrong, but as a fan of the original (and best) version of the Guardians I'm not looking forward to this movie. I would rather see a movie based on the exploits of Starhawk / Aleta, Vance, Charlie, Martinex & co.
Remembering the farce that was the last Green lantern film, I'm not looking forward to this.

The Guardians (new version) could easily convert well into a giant space opera. They must not make the mistake that Green lantern did though. Everything must be set in space!

It feels like instead of Avengers 2 that they're angling themselves towards a full blown Marvel Universe movie; which is awesome.
