The Reuben Awards will include an 'Online Comics Strips' category for the first time in its history in 2012.
Event organiser the National Cartoonists Society
(NCS) confirmed that the May ceremony will introduce a webcomics prize as a "first step" towards supporting artists who work exclusively online.
"This is definitely a 'first step' in recognising online cartooning in the NCS divisional awards. It's been discussed and explored for several years, and there are a lot of challenges involved," NCS president Tom Richmond told The Washington Post
"I picked the brains of several big names in online comics, and worked with the board to try and come up with criteria for eligibility that were in keeping with the other divisions and the NCS rules. This is what we came up with."
The Reuben Awards, previously named the Billy DeBeck Memorial Awards, has honoured outstanding achievement in various fields of illustration since 1946. It features categories for both 'Best Comic Book' and 'Best Graphic Novel'.
The 66th Annual Reuben Awards Dinner, where this year's winner will be announced, takes place at the Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa, Henderson, NV on May 26, 2012.> More comics news
